Are Chill Pills the New Drug of Choice?

According to nearly 7 million people abuse prescription drugs. Of those, over 2 million are abusing tranquilizers and half a million are abusing sedatives; both of these are considered chill pills. But with the over-prescribing and overuse of these drugs, when does a person really need these drugs?

“Many clients reach out to Narconon and NA for help for problems with prescriptions and chill pills,” says Daniel Manson, President of Vista Bay. “Often, they start taking the medication during a stressful period in their lives and are then unable to stop. Most don’t understand how addictive these drugs are until it’s too late and they require treatment to stop using them.”

The most commonly abused chill pills include Xanax, Valium, Soma and sleeping aids. Many have also been abusing an anxiety medication called Buspar as well as Ativan and Klonopin.

“We are seeing a clear increase in the number of people needing help for abuse of these medications,” says Manson. “This is both the responsibility of doctors to ensure the drugs are not being overprescribed as well as the patients who should be aware of how abusive they are.”

Manson suggests turning to natural alternatives to handle depression and anxiety. Some of these include a change of environment, diet and even implementing an exercise program. Often locating and handling areas of stress in one’s life is also beneficial, so that medication is not the first option when one is experiencing problems.
