Caffeine Supplements Senior Strength

In a new study presented at the Society for Experimental Biology conference last month, researchers found that “caffeine boosts power in older muscles, suggesting the stimulant could aid elderly people to maintain their strength, reducing the incidence of falls and injuries”.

During their research, sports scientists at Coventry University looked at whether age-related changes in muscle could be improved with the use of caffeine. They found that caffeine enhanced muscle performance for seniors as well as adults in their prime. And while the boost in strength was less significant for the seniors, the researchers concluded that “the performance-enhancing benefit of caffeine could prove beneficial in the aging population.”

They believe that since age-related strength loss contributes to injuries and a reduced quality of life, the performance-enhancing benefit of caffeine could prove beneficial in the aging population.”
